Half Marathon Training: 5 Miles with 2 Miles at Tempo
As I mentioned previously, I switched up my training plan. The Runner’s World plan I am not using has me doing tempo runs, something I have absolutely no experience with. In order to find my “tempo run pace”, I plugged my recent 5K finish time into the Runner’s World Training Calculator. This is what it gave me (in min/mile):
- Easy Run: 10:24
- Tempo Run: 8:41
- Maximum Oxygen: 7:50
- Speed Form: 7:15
- Long Run: 10:24 - 11:42
- Yasso 800’s: 4:01
I’m not even sure what some of those numbers mean (Speed form? Maximum Oxygen? Yasso 800’s? - Shows you how little I know about running). I do know that I have been running my long runs at a sub 9:00 min/mile pace, so running at a 10:24 - 11:42 min/mile pace seems a bit odd to me.
I tried my hand at my tempo run today, but who knows if I actually ran it correctly. Do I run my 2 miles at tempo pace consecutively? Do I split them up? I chose the former. My splits were as follows (in min/mile):
- Mile 1: 10:00
- Mile 2: 8:34
- Mile 3: 8:34
- Mile 4: 10:00
- Mile 5: 10:00
Average Pace: 9:26.
Like I said, all these pace calculations and speed work is foreign to me. My normal training plan is get out there and run at a comfortable pace. Normally, that is between 8:30 and 9:00 min/mile. I will say that running slower was very enjoyable. Maybe I’ve been running too fast all along?
Today’s run was brought to you by Lady Gaga. I finally downloaded Born This Way in it’s entirety. My first impression? Mediocre at best. Hopefully it will grow on me. I will say this: Lady Gaga is one crazy SOB, and I love it.
